We need to talk about wild dogs

Last year the Victorian Labor Government promised it would talk to farmers about the impact of wild dogs and the success of the livestock protection buffer that helps protect them. The buffer gives the state’s wild dog controllers the authority to bait and trap wild dogs on public land within 3km of the farm fence. It was introduced in 2012. Trappers say it cut the activity of wild dogs by 400%.

When the 5-year orders that creates the buffer came up for review at the end of September 2023 it was reduced to a 12-month extension to allow for a further review and consultation. Since then, we ‘ve heard nothing.
