Shadow Minister for Regional Public Transport Steph Ryan has welcomed the Australian Transport Safety Bureau’s (ATSB) preliminary findings into the derailment of the XPT service at Wallan on February 20.
“I hope this report can help bring closure to the families of the two men who tragically lost their lives and the passengers who were on board the train that day,” she said.
“The report helps establish some of the basic facts around the accident, including the fact the train was travelling at 100km/h as it entered the passing loop which had a designated speed of 15km/h.
“The ATSB has noted that its preliminary investigation does not include any findings, factors contributing to the crash or safety issues. These will be detailed in the final report.
“I welcome the ATSB’s commitment to notifying operators, regulators and the public should it become aware of critical safety concerns during the course of its investigation.”
