Drivers must not be left in the lurch

The Liberal Nationals are calling on the State Government to prioritise those who have had their driving licence tests cancelled because of the COVID-19 crisis when testing recommences.

VicRoads cancelled driving testing last week, with many young drivers finding out about the changes as they were lining up at a VicRoads office to begin their P Plate driving test.

Despite VicRoads indicating that it is working on arrangements to have testing carried out for situations that have exceptional circumstances, no decision has been made on the process for rescheduling other tests.

The suspension of testing is to protect health and safety however, there will now be a massive backlog once testing recommences.

“I am fully-supportive of VicRoads suspending testing at the current time to protect the health of its staff and for drivers.

“We are calling on the State Government to prioritise people that have had tests cancelled when the testing system is reopened for bookings. This will ensure a fair system for those that have already had to endure long waits.”

“In rural and regional areas, having a driver’s licence is essential. Access to public transport is often non-existent, and people are living kilometres from towns and services.

“A licence means a young person can access part-time work, education and, when things return to normal, to have social time with their friends without having to rely on their busy parents.

“Having driving tests cancelled is a further kick in the guts to young people, and knowing they have priority when testing resumes will provide some comfort.”
