The Andrews Government must act immediately to fix broken signalling on the Seymour line following revelations V/Line’s safe working system has been inoperable between Craigieburn and Seymour since October 2017.
The signalling system on the V/Line operated tracks is an antiquated double line block system, installed in the 1890s which operates using Morse code and is the only one left in Australia.
In October 2017, the system failed. Two and half years on it’s still not working.
As a result, signal operators have been operating the line manually.
The revelations come after the Andrews Labor Government axed $149 million from V/Line’s budget last year.
Comments to be attributed to Shadow Minister for Regional Public Transport Steph Ryan
Daniel Andrews is taking shortcuts with passenger safety as he rips money away from V/Line for critical maintenance.
It is unfathomable that not even the antiquated, nineteenth century signalling system that uses Morse code is working on the V/Line network along this stretch of track.
Labor has eyes only for the city while it allows the state’s regional rail network to fall into a state of disrepair.
