Reports that drug manufacturing charges have been brought against the operators of a drug rehabilitation centre in Melbourne highlights yet another community safety failure by the Andrews Labor Government.
Currently, Victoria has no regulations as to who can open and operate a private drug and alcohol rehab clinic in Victoria – opening the door to dodgy operators grossly taking advantage of their clients.
Alarmingly, it has been revealed that drug offenders were referred to this centre as a condition of their bail, as judges are left in the dark as to the service standard of the rehabilitation centres they are making referrals to.
This incident follows recent drug trafficking charges being brought against employees at Daniel Andrews’ North Richmond drug injecting centre and highlights clear failings of Labor’s inability to regulate drug use and rehabilitation centres in Victoria.
With charges for possessing Ice up more than 137 per cent under Labor, Daniel Andrews’ do nothing approach to regulating drug rehabilitation centres is a threat to the safety of all Victorians.
Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Police & Community Safety, David Southwick:
“It’s a disgrace that courts would bail offenders to a rehabilitation centre to help people get off drugs when the centre is actually manufacturing them.
“Daniel Andrews’ failure to properly regulate centres such as these has allowed very vulnerable people to be taken advantage of and placed the safety of the community at risk.
“Victorians are rightly concerned as to how this has been allowed to occur and Labor must act immediately to ensure that our community is kept safe.”
