AT 4.40pm on Friday the Department of Health and Human Services issued a Health Alert which outlined that the supply for Influenza Vaccine for 3-5 year-olds is out of stock and the vaccine for children under 3 there is limited availability.
Minister for Health, Jill Hennessy promised free flu vaccinations for all Victorian children under 5 saying:
“We’re ensuring kids aged under five can access a free flu vaccination before another deadly flu season starts” and “Flu isn’t like the common cold. It can have serious and devastating outcomes.”
Daniel Andrews and Jill Hennessy have a potential health crisis that is solely their responsibility.
Having made the free flu vaccination commitment, Jill Hennessy should have ensured Victoria had supplies to vaccinate every Victorian child.
The fact that we do not have enough influenza vaccines for children under the age of 5 means Victorian kids are unprotected against a possibly life threatening virus.
The flu season is already underway with 162 Victorian kids under 5 having already contracted the flu this year, up from 92 at this time last year.
