Shadow Minister for Public Transport, David Hodgett
Today the Andrews Labor Government announced its intention to ram through legislation for a new tax on taxis and ridesharing services without proper scrutiny from the Parliament.
Before the election Daniel Andrews promised no new taxes – he has broken that promise.
Daniel Andrews’ new tax will mean higher fares for all taxi and Uber passengers and it will particularly affect those living in the regions and the elderly that use taxis to get to and from medical appointments.
This new tax that Daniel Andrews will introduce has no end date and will affect every taxi and ridesharing trip taken in Victoria.
By the Andrews Government’s own modelling they will lose $26 million just collecting this tax in the first year.
Let us be clear, Daniel Andrews is taxing people moving around our state.
The Liberal Nationals have immediately sought an amendment to allow proper consultation with the community, taxis and rideshare services and the tourism industry regarding this new tax.
Daniel Andrews has shown he has no regard for consultation, forcing the unwanted Sky Rail on to residents and announcing a Youth Jail in Werribee without consulting the local community.
The Andrews Government used its numbers in the Legislative Assembly to block this amendment and force the Bill in.
