Shadow Attorney General, John Pesutto
Moves by the Melbourne City Council to deal with the crisis surrounding the City’s rough-sleepers, is an indictment on Daniel Andrews’ decision in 2015 to abolish move-on laws which weakened police powers to help deal with these situations.
The consequence of the vacuum created by the Andrews Government’s mistake will now risk creating different by-laws for different municipalities around Melbourne.
With 79 Council areas in Victoria, are we now to have 79 different sets of laws to deal with this problem?
It’s the responsibility of the State Government to fix this problem, but Daniel Andrews is content to sit it out and watch the mess his Government created unfold.
Victorians are supportive and compassionate towards those who are genuinely homeless, but they have had enough of people who occupy our streets, engage in open drug use and dealing all the while intimidating and abusing innocent and law-abiding people.
