Evidence provided to a Senate inquiry on changes to protect the CFA states volunteers close to the Victorian border with New South Wales are seriously considering leaving the organisation. In NSW, it has come to our attention, that CFA volunteers close to the NSW border have been contacting our brigades enquiring about membership. Should this continue, it could potentially leave some communities in Victoria at risk (NSW RFS submission to Fair Work Amendment (Respect for Emergency Services Volunteers) Bill 2016) Emergency Services Minister James Merlino ignored this evidence today in Parliament and merely parroted his claims that the EBA ‘will not impact on volunteers’. But it is clear the impact is already being felt. Our country volunteers are dedicated to their communities, but Labor’s sustained attack on the CFA has seen confidence plunge. We are just weeks from the start of the fire season – volunteers should be left to focus on defending against bushfires, not attacks by the Andrews Labor Government. Daniel Andrews must end his war on the CFA, before his actions leave Victorian communities at risk.
