Shadow Minister for Public Transport, David Hodgett
Daniel Andrews has broken an election promise by announcing a new tax on Victorians who take taxis and Ubers.
There is nothing fair about slugging consumers $2 every time they take a taxi or Uber.
This means Victorians will pay more for Uber than any other state. This will also drive up the cost of taxis and hire cars which will put more pressure on cost of living.
This $2 per trip tax will especially hurt pensioners and regional Victorians who have limited public transport options.
Daniel Andrews promised before the election that he wouldn’t introduce any new taxes or levies but after 18 months he has just announced his third new tax.
Anything that makes transport more expensive for Victorians is not a good outcome and we will need to see modelling around any proposed levy and licence buy back schemes.
A $2 tax on every single passenger fare is unreasonable and unjustified.
