Shadow Minister for Corrections, Edward O’Donohue
Media reports today that up to 50 prison officers have called in sick because of management and safety concerns raise fresh questions about the management of the corrections system.
Last June, the Metropolitan Remand Centre saw the worst prison riot in Victoria’s history. The budget yesterday revealed the true cost of Daniel Andrews failure to prevent that riot at nearly $100m, money that should be available to employ more police, nurses and teachers.
The youth justice system has seen multiple riots in recent months, prisoners are not being presented to court due to capacity issues and there has been two separate prisoner escapes in recent weeks.
Today’s reports require an urgent explanation from the Minister for Corrections.
Daniel Andrews is failing to provide the leadership needed to take charge of the corrections system. It’s not good enough.
