State Member for Morwell Russell Northe
It was the Coalition Government that established and conducted a detailed inquiry into the Hazelwood incident.
The Coalition supported the recommendations of the review and immediately set about implementing them.
The Hazelwood Mine Fire Inquiry Report Implementation and Monitoring Plan set out the recommendations, actions completed and further actions to be carried out. The report is here.
In November 2014, the Coalition also commissioned a 20-year health study into the Hazelwood mine, led by Monash University researchers.
Additional actions to protect the community included:
* Established a new Latrobe City CFA District to enhance the CFA’s ability to work with industry / community and build the CFA’s capability to respond to future fires/ risks
* Set up a new Coal Mine Emergency Management Taskforce – details here
* Improved air quality monitoring in the Morwell region by the EPA.
Comments from Member for Morwell Russell Northe:
“Today’s response builds on extensive work by the Liberal-Nationals to ensure the Latrobe Valley does not experience an event like this again.
“I will be holding the Andrews Government to account to make sure they deliver on each of their commitments to the community.
“The health, safety and wellbeing of Latrobe Valley residents and workers must always be the number one priority.
“This issue is above political point-scoring – it’s about ensuring our community does not have to endure another incident like this in the future.”
