Wodonga Turf Club will become a major player in the events and exhibition space on the Border with a $1.65 million investment by a Liberal Nationals Government.

If elected in November, a Matthew Guy-led government will provide funding towards the $7 million first stage of the club’s Master Plan, which includes the construction of a new function centre and redevelopment of the existing bookie ring into a flexible option for events and shows.

The funding will also improve the trackside lawn area and historic grandstand that dates back to 1929.

More than 60,000 patrons use the racecourse each year and this investment could double those numbers.

The function centre will also help the Wodonga Turf Club continue to support the community and not-for-profit organisations. More than 30 groups used the racecourse and showgrounds precinct in the past 12 months including schools, sporting clubs, charities, agricultural organisations, the Lions Club and CFA.

Comments attributable to Shadow Minister for Racing, Tim Bull:

“Bill Tilley has been a passionate advocate for this project. It is an investment in a community asset that saw more than 60,000 people pass through the gates last year supporting a wide range of events.

”A Liberal Nationals Government will continue to support proactive clubs with investments that benefit the club and wider community.”

Comments attributable to Member for Benambra, Bill Tilley:

“I’m confident this development will turn the racecourse into a much needed major events centre.

“It’s important this announcement is not just about racing, this is for the local community of Wodonga.”

Comments attributable to Wodonga and District Turf Club General Manager, Tom O’Connor:

“This will bring our facilities into the 21st Century.

“To get this commitment from the Liberal Nationals to kick-start the project is fantastic.”

Caravan Trade and Industries Association of Victoria Chief Executive, Rob Lucas:

“We’ve been coming to Wodonga since 2011 and this is a big tick for a relationship that continues to grow.

“To have a space with greater versatility, catering to indoor exhibitors and able to manage social events will make the venue even more attractive to organisations such as ours.”
